Therapeutic Communication on Nursing Exams

Recognize responses that invite expression, preserve autonomy, and maintain professional boundaries.

Therapeutic responses focus on the patient’s experience rather than the nurse’s opinion. Prefer open-ended invitations, reflection, clarification, silence, and acknowledgment of feelings. Avoid false reassurance, premature advice, changing the subject, and asking accusatory “why” questions.\n\nWhen two options both sound caring, choose the one that gathers assessment data before solving the problem. In crisis or safety situations, direct questions and clear limits may be necessary. Context determines whether exploration or immediate protection comes first.
